Swimming Pool at Gaj Retreat
THE SWIMMING POOL AT GAJ RETREAT- GARHSHANKER
It was a windfall moment – the spot chosen for the location of the new swimming pool at
the Gaj ended up as a treasure trove for a huge quantity of white stones, which actually should be
called boulders.
The shape of the site decided the shape of the pool for us – the layout of which was done in
a jiffy – using std PVC conduits as teh only measuring tool. The pool is a product of
squares of 3 m side randomly arranged to fit the available space in the vacant area left
between the cottages – and it turned out to be quite a design.
3 partly sunk pavilions were made at the pool's corners – to accommodate fireplaces
with seating surrounding it. A set of stairs led down to each of these suunken pavilions –
giving one a great feeling of being almost at the water level. Of course, one could walk
down into these pavilions with shoes and clothes on............!!!
Meanwhile, the concept was to create various corners or alcoves where families could
huddle together – based on the social mores of the day. While swimmers could swim their
laps without bumping into others just lazing around in their alcoves....creating less stress
all around.
The middle area was also used to make a wedding mandap – for some intrepid couple to
be..........while the pandit chanted his wedding mantras inches above the blue water.
The standard provisions of pumps and filters were provided, along with lots of seating for
matronly and sedate moms and dads – watching their youngsters enjoying themselves. I
guess the vicarious feelings helped.
In the sale of drinks and aperitifs.
All in all – a successful venture.............!!!!
